Features
An extremely intuitive, user-friendly interface. MegaStar was
created by an avid amateur astronomer who was an observer long
before he ever sat down before a computer. The result is software
that works like an observer works and not like a computer
programmer thinks it ought to work.
Deep sky objects are plotted to scale, galaxies are rotated to
show their position angle. When you observe, it is a lot easier to
find things if you have an idea of what to look for. Knowing how
large an object is and how it is oriented can make all the difference
in the world. No other computer atlas is as good at this as
MegaStar, simply because only MegaStar has a database that has
been checked directly against the Digital Sky Survey by Larry
Mitchell and Emil Bonanno. Literally tens of thousands of sizes,
positions and position angles have been improved in MegaStarís
database.
Selectable field size from 180 degrees to 1 arc-minute, selectable
to the nearest arc-second. The 180 degree field includes your
horizon line and creates a ìplanetariumî view of the sky.
Field center selectable to the nearest arc-second.
Options for filtering stars and deep sky objects by magnitude,
type, and catalog. Also includes NGC/IC, Herschel and Messier
filters. Once you determine your telescopeís limiting magnitude
you
can filter out all objects too faint to be seen.
On-chart labeling of objects.
Inverted and/or mirror-image views. Plus the field can be rotated
to orient the sky as you see it through your telescope or finder
scope.
Zoom in or out.
Adjustable field panning.
Night vision mode for use at your observing site.
Selectable fonts, colors object symbols and cursor styles
Save and restore multiple configurations. With this feature you can
plan out an observing run step-by-step and return to all or part of
it without having to setup all the parameters.
Coordinate readout of cursor position, and distance/p.a. readout
between two points
Status Bar readout of field size, constellation, Uranometria 2000.0
chart number (both first and second editions), altitude and azimuth
Quickly locate deep sky objects by designation or common name
Quickly locate stars by SAO/HD/GSC/Flamsteed number, Bayer
letter, or common name
Click on an object to display information about that object.
MegaStarís database is fully intergrated to not only include such
things as size, magnitude, type, etc. but designations from other
catalogs and much other useful data.
Display eyepiece field of view for up to 20 customizable eyepieces
Movable, rotatable image framer for CCD or film. Will also show
the position of off-axis guider frames, to help you select guide
stars.
Telrad and finder scope field of view overlays
Built-in Database Utility to generate filtered list of objects or add
new objects
Plot tracks of comets, asteroids and planets. Create ephemerides.
Show moon phases.
Add new comet, asteroid elements or modify existing elements.
Element data files can be downloaded from Lowell Observatory
and Minor Planet Center.
Print professional-quality charts with any Windows-compatible
printer. MegaStar is renowned for its chart making
capabilitiesósee examples on facing page.
Numerous chart-printing options, such as selectable fonts, colors,
star symbol sizes, legends, etc.
Copy charts to the Windows Clipboard for importing into
documents
Telescope interfaces for LX2000, Sky Commander, NGC-MAX,
Sky Vector, Advanced AstroMaster, Sky Wizard 3, AstroPhysics
GTO, Sky Wizard CTI, MicroGuider III, BBox, Celestron
NexStar 5/8. GPS.
User-definable hot keys and context menus add power and
versatility to the user interface.
Stars can be displayed in color according to their spectral class.
78,800 objects displayed have accompanying photographs.
Databases
More than 208,000 deep sky objects with data: up to 13 alternate
designations per object, type, size, magnitude, classification, radial
velocity, position angle, etc.
189,500 Galaxies
5,250 Galaxy Clusters
580 Globular Clusters
1,420 Open Clusters
1,140 Planetary Nebulae

270 Dark Nebulae
7,300 Quasars
2,200 "Unknown/Non-Existent" NGC/IC entries
Thousands of corrections to positions and position angles have
been incorporated into the MegaStar database, the result of an

4. TOPOGRAPHIC QUADRANGLES
TopoUSA requires an Intel Pentium 60 or higher processor, 16MB of RAM, 30MB of available hard disk space, a CD drive, and a mouse. In the Display' settings of the start menu, the color palette must be set for High Color (16 bit). Otherwise, the brown contour lines will appear gray, and will be invisible in the green forested areas, which will also appear gray.
None of the local superstores list TopoUSA among their available programs. It is a specialty item. However, it is available on-line from www.mdwin.com for $84.
TopoUSA can be loaded and run from any of the four CDs. InstallShield is used for loading; there are no special problems. For running, select the CD containing the area to be examined at a high magnification. This avoids shutting down the program to change a CD. All the CDs will zoom from Magnification 4, which covers the entire U.S., to 9, which produces maps at 8 miles to the inch on a 15-inch monitor. Each magnification represents a step of two. To zoom in further, to magnification 16, it is necessary to have the CD representing the proper quadrant in the drive. Magnification 16, the highest, shows maps on a scale of 1:4000, or about 300 feet to the inch. For comparison, the U.S. Geological Survey's paper topographic quadrangles have a scale of 1:24000.
On a topographic map, the works of humanity, roads and names, are shown in black. This is available elsewhere, but the Delorme presentation is as good or better. Delorme is particularly strong in showing unimproved back roads. True, Delorme does not attempt to show, as the Survey does, each individual rural building as a small black block. But then, you can't zoom a paper Survey map by clicking on an icon. Also, the Survey provides no 'Print' button. TopoUSA prints superbly.
Both Delorme and the Survey show, in blue, every mappable watercourse; their data is comparable, and better than anyone else's. Both show forested areas and orchards in green. But the distinguishing features of these maps are the brown contour lines. Each of these represents the location of the shoreline if the ocean were raised a certain, given number of feet. The altitude of each location can be determined directly; the slope, the direction of the slope, and the general contour of the land can also be determined. Topographic maps are absolutely essential for off-road activities of all sorts, sports and otherwise; also, for many engineering applications, and for environmental management.
To move to a location, click on its name in a scrolling window after typing the first few letters. Further adjustments may be made by re-centering the map. Place the cursor at the desired center and click. Input from a Global Positioning System receiver may also be used to position the cursor at your present location.
Perhaps the most important way in which the Delorme maps fall short of the Survey's is the fact that only 50 and 100-foot intervals are used for the contour lines, with 200 in Alaska. In a flat state like Florida, with the highest elevation falling below 400 feet, there are very few contour lines. One would think that Floridians need not be concerned about elevation; but they are. They have floods and hurricane surges, and the placement of shelters might be a matter of life and death. In the Everglades, the slope, and the direction of the slope, even at one foot per mile, determines the flow in the River of Grass, and which of those sugar fields the phosphate is coming from. Geological Survey contour intervals can range down to five feet, or in special cases, two.
A serious tool for serious people, these four CD's contain much of the material in thousands of 18"x23" U.S Geological Survey topographic quadrangles. Do they fully substitute for them? Not quite; but they may be all that you need.

Topo USA shows the bumps. A very slick user interface shows the maps in two dimensions on the right and three on the left. Moving the cursor in the right screen causes a red cone-shaped object to mirror the movement on the left screen. The level of detail provided is impressive. Starting out with a view of the entire northeast United States, it took me only a few mouse movements to zero in near my house in Summit, N.J., and to discover that section of Tulip Street is 404 feet above sea level. Other checks of favorite hiking trails showed them very accurately and the birds-eye 3-D view suggested new route that might reward the dog with some unmarked trees. Besides looking at the maps on screen, you can print them to a size as large as 3 feet by 3 feet on an ordinary printer (you then assemble the pieces). And, if you're a trailblazer and find a trail or road that doesn't exist in the database, there's a feature that lets you draw it in appropriately. For the really high-tech hiker, there's even a connection to display location from a Global Positioning System (GPS). Delorme
