Syllabus for COSI 240
Discrete Structures
Spring Semester 2000

Class Meetings: Tuesday - Thursday  12:30 p.m. - 01:45 p.m., GOH 416
Instructor: Dr. John Harris, Professor of Math and Computer Science
Office Hours: Posted on the office door, GOH 100A.

Textbook: Discrete Mathematics by Johnsonbaugh.

Course Description: Review of set algebra, including mappings and relations; algebraic structures, including semi-graphs and graphs. Elements of directed and indirected graphs; Boolear algebra, propositional logic, and an introduction to finite state machines; and applications.

Prerequisites: COSI 220 and MATH 201.

Course Objectives: To introduce the student to the basic concepts of discrete structures and to give the student the background needed to take more advanced courses in computer science.

Classroom Procedures: There will be daily lectures and discussions. Some sessions will be devoted to problem solving.

Grading: There will be five tests, including the final exam. Each test will count 18 percent of the final average. The final exam will cover the last one half (1/2) of the course material. Make-ups will be given only in cases where a valid excuse has presented. (A doctor's statement is an example of a valid excuse). The student should present his/her valid excuse BEFORE requesting a make-up.

Homework: Homework (HW) will be assigned frequently. Homework will count 10% of the final grade. Homework will be graded twice, once at mid-term (5%) and then at the end of the semester (5%). HW should be kept in a neat folder.

Incomplete Grades: An (I) will not be given in cases where the student misses a large number of assignments. Students who find that they cannot do major parts of the assigned work should note the drop date.

Grading Scale: 100-90 = A; 89-80 = B; 79-70; = C; 69-60 = D; Below 60 = F

Attendance: Three cuts are allowed each student. Each cut above three will subtract one (1) point from final average. Three late attendances to class will count as one cut. Leaving before the end of the class counts the same as a late attendance. If a student arrives after the roll is called, it is his/ her responsibility to see that his/her attendance is recorded at the end of the class hours. Attendance is important. A student who repeatedly misses classes is advised to drop the course.

Equipment: The student will need to purchase a scientific hand calculator. Texas Instrument Model 30 is recommended.
